Flea and Worming

  Dogs

Worming
We highly recommend worming dogs from two weeks of age every two weeks until 12 weeks old. Then monthly worming until six months of age, and every three months thereafter in combination with a flea treatment. Pregnant bitches need additional worming from day 40 of the gestation period until two days post weaning.

Flea Treatment
We recommend a monthly spot-on treatment to help prevent a flea infestation on your pet and in your household environment. As well as being a nuisence fleas can pass on diseases to your pet and cause a serious skin allergy in sensitive dogs. They can produce and lay large numbers of eggs in the house, and the eggs live up to a year in the environment before hatching. We can provide various types of treatments covering fleas, ticks, biting lice, ear mites, sarcoptic mange and demodex.

Some of our spot-on treatments also cover roundworms, lungworm, heartworm, whipworm and hookworm. It is advisable to speak to your veterinary surgeon to help select the best treatment for your pet and home.

Cats

Worming
Similarly to dogs, we highly recommend worming dogs from two weeks of age every two weeks until 12 weeks old. Then monthly worming until six months of age, and then every one to three months thereafter depending on the lifestyle and hunting habits of the cat.

Flea Treatment
A monthly spot-on treatment is also recommended for cats to help prevent fleas, lice and mites. The treatment we provide also covers for roundworms, hookworm and heartworms. However, tapeworms are not covered so a three-monthly worming tablet is also recommended.

It is important to remember that for both dogs and cats worming treatments only kills any worms the animal has at the time. This is why it is important to regularly treat your pet for worms, as they can cause anaemia, diarrhoea and vomiting. Effective and regular control and prevention of these parasites is essential to protect not only your pet’s health, but also the health of other cats and dogs and humans that may be in contact.
